MEL Chemistry — December 2016 Review

We’re (practically) chemists!

MEL Chemistry
$49.90 Per Month

Ships Free to US, UK and Russia

MEL Chemistry is a brand new monthly subscription full of science goodness. This box is specifically geared for kids 12 and up, but all of my kids, including my nine-year-old, were really into it!

When you subscribe, your first month includes this fun starter kit, which made my inner teacher hyperventilate a little.

I like their nifty labeled photo.

An in-depth colorful booklet lets you know all about the apps and activities you get to explore.

My husband was giddy over the VR goggles that are included.

Oh, and bonus chemicals!

Each month, two experiment sets arrive.

Love the inner box!

We worked on the Tin kit first.

My daughters wanted to get started right away.

First, we made a tin hedgehog out of a zinc pellet.

And we were able to get more help and more scientific info from the MEL Chemistry app. Also, notice our cute phone stand that was conveniently included.

Here’s a close-up of our hedgehog.

Our second experiment in the tin kit was forming a tin dendrite with the aid of electrical current.

This metal “tree” was beautiful!

Our next experiments were all about burning sugar.

I can tell you that this “Sugar Snake” was one of the best science experiments we have ever conducted. It led to a lot of speculation and a lot of extra burning!

In my opinion, the best thing any educational kit can do is inspire more learning. My youngest woke up today asking if we could do chemistry, and when I didn’t have a new MEL Chemistry kit, she grabbed her protective goggles and conducted her own experiments on snow.

MEL Science is a wonderful hands-on subscription service. This first box was chock full of fun and learning, and we are excited to receive our next installment. If you’re interested in this subscription, you can learn more or subscribe HERE.

I live in Utah with my carnivorous husband, three swell daughters, and two semi-trained dogs at the base of some of the most beautiful mountains in the world. Sometimes I write for money, but usually I just play Candy Crush.

I am a vegan, homeschooling mom who might be a tad obsessed with subscription boxes. My infatuation is evidenced by my uncanny ability to recognize the sound of my mail carrier’s truck engine. I’d like to say don’t judge me, but if I were you, I’d judge me. I love vegan/eco-friendly, literary and thoughtfully curated boxes.

  1. Wow this looks like a good one! I’m surprised that they actually sent 2M Hydrochloric acid in the box! I love that they also included some PPEs, such as safety glasses and gloves tho. And your daughters are so cute (and serious) in the pics btw!
