Culture Chest, a brand new children’s book and activity subscription, is all about celebrating diversity!
Each month, Culture Chest sends 2-3 picture books about different cultures based on a monthly theme such as music or food. You can choose between two age groups: 0-3 and 3-8, but I’ll tell you right now, my nine-year-old loved our book choices this month! This month, the books celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and music.
Each month, you will also receive an activity to complete together. This month’s activity is a shoe box guitar which definitely fits the dancing and music theme. We have made these in the past, and they are really fun!
We loved our first book: My Name is Celia/Me llamo Celia: The Life of Celia Cruz/la vida de Celia Cruz by by Monica Brown (Author) and Rafael Lopez (Illustrator). It won the Americas Award for Children’s and Young Adult Literature. It is a multilingual Spanish/English edition. I read this to all my girls, because you are always the right age for a beautiful and educational picture book.
The writing is fun and catchy, and the illustrations are beautiful and happy! All of us loved it. We were inspired to learn more about Celia Cruz, and spent quite a bit of time listening to Celia’s music and reading more about her life.
Our second book, Tito Puente, Mambo King/Tito Puente, Rey del Mambo, also by Monica Brown and Rafael Lopez, is another perfect choice!
This book is full of vibrant illustrations and poetic onomatopoeia. I am certainly a fan of this author/illustrator team.
