AdoreBox – April 2015 Review

AdoreBox is a brand new beauty box from the folks at online discount retailer, Divine and Sexy. The boxes are kinda neat as each one is slightly different from the other, but… this inaugural box left me with some questions/suggestions.

AdoreBox is brand new – the April box being their first. I actually really like the premise of this box; each box is slightly different so you never know exactly what you’re going to get. This box doesn’t have fancy packaging or squiggles or anything, it’s in a plain cardboard box – which I honestly don’t mind as long as it’s done right – but I do have some concerns overall.

Divine and Sexy’s store has mystery boxes, and items ranging from drugstore makeup to high end purses. I actually just bought a Betsey Johnson wristlet because I’d been lusting over that particular one for years – so for 17$ I was pretty okay with that. Some of the items in their shop are older stock though, and I can only assume they’ll eventually end up in the box (something I’m okay with as long as it’s new-to-me and clean).

Each box comes with an info card detailing the items you got and their retail pricing. The box also mentions that you have items not listed on your card, and are supposed to consider them special add-ins. (NOTE: This box was provided for review so I’m unsure if the add-ins are a condition of that or if all subscribers get them)

L’Oreal Colour Riche Nail Lingerie
These I actually don’t mind. If I was the type to actively wear polish (or alternatively, brave the unknown world that is nail appliques) these would be the exact type I wear. They’re feminine and sparkly, exactly what I like.

Wonderpuff Deep Exfoliating Cleansing Puff
Puffs! I actually actively use these because my skin is in that annoying transitional phase from “dry as the desert” to “doused in oil,” due to Spring/Summer. This puff is slightly more abrasive than I’d prefer but it’s still very usable, just maybe not daily.

Dr. Rey Severe Line Refine Serum
Well this I’ve never heard of. It’s a good size sample and doesn’t give off any sort of distinct odors, but the card lists this at retail of 18$ and I gotta question that.  Otherwise the formula seems fine enough, it’s not thick or greasy.

Prada Bio-Firm Concentrate
This is an item I originally thought was a perfume sample, and I sorta wish it was to be honest. I can’t quite find this as being actively produced.

Profusion Eyeliner/Mascara Duo
Eyeliner invasion! I’m pretty happy this is a sealed item, and I’ll definitely try out the mascara. I’m just not an eyeliner gal.

Milani Glitzy Eyez Purple Eyeliner
See Profusion. *This was a freebie

DMG Eye and Lip Liner
It’s blackest of the black so I can’t see it being a viable lip color unless you were going for a Homestuck cosplay. This wasn’t sealed but the inside looked fine.

Oli Anti-Aging Contour Cream
This smells a lot like olive oil and it’s very smooth but maybe the tiniest bit greasy.

Milani Lipstick
This is a packaging that is no longer used and it also wasn’t sealed – the inside looked pristine and smelled fine though, so I swatched it and was pleasantly surprised by the color. It dries far too matte for my liking but I do really love that color. *This was a freebie.

For their inaugural box I felt that AdoreBox did “okay.” There’s a semi-decent mix of items by mostly well known brands, but does a gal need 3 eyeliners in the same box? Since each box is hand packed I would have hoped that someone would have thought that maybe that was a wee bit redundant/excessive. A few things I’d change though – make sure makeup items are manufacturer sealed before sending. Items don’t necessarily need to be on shelves or brand new, but they should at least have a recent manufacture date.

Now for the good news, they released a spoiler for their May box and so far it’s going to have an OCC Lip Tar and a Makeup Forever Aqua Cream, among other random goodies. I do definitely recommend the May box, but I’m not sure I’d recommend it as a long term subscription as of yet. I definitely think it has some growing to do before it becomes a viable contender in a fairly cutthroat market.

If you’re interested in AdoreBox, the cost is 15$ per month but you can get a box for half off by using code halfoff. If you’re interested in other opinions, my friends at Boxy Ladies and Subaholic each have their own reviews posted.

PR Sample. All opinions are my own and no compensation was received.

  1. I think Adore Box is worth it! If I had to choose between Ipsy/Birchbox or Adore Box for just a few bucks more, I’d go for Adore Box. You get what you pay. Our box was slightly differently, we got a MAC eyeshadow – love it! We love our brands because the formula is just different with better brands. They’re better and more pigmented AND longer-lasting.

We tried the OCC lip tar from Glossybox, and it’s really nice. There was a OCC lip tar knock-off from Ipsy and it couldn’t compare to the OCC brand.

    1. I probably would have really enjoyed this box if it didn’t have three items I’m literally banned from using (eyeliners). It truly does have a ton of potential and I can see it being a top box contender. I hope the boxes continue to wow you hun <3 I unsubscribed, but the spoilers do look great for May's box :D

Yuh there's several OCC knockoffs and I do really like the formula of the original better than others. There's a J Cat one that smells like actual paint, it's really quite bad lol

  2. Definitely looks like a good amount of stuff for the price! I might have to look into this one, any idea of they ship to Canada? I’m also intrigued by the D&S mystery boxes! Have you tried any of those?

    1. I haven’t tried the mystery boxes, but I want to. My order from their store still hasn’t shipped so I might be a wee bit worried. :/

I don’t think they ship to Canada yet. Their monthly boxes sold out super fast so I’m guessing they just don’t have much stock yet.

  3. Ok. It does sound like a good deal. . .however your contact page is not in working order & I can’t reach anyone with my questions!!! I signed up on the 3 month deal, still have not heard from you regarding when I will start receiving shipments. I feel like you certainly took my payment in a timely matter & then nothing. Please contact me regarding this.

    1. We’re bloggers who reviewed AdoreBox, we are not actually them and therefore can’t answer questions for them. What I can tell you is that they are still sending out marketing e-mails so someone is still active at their company. Try contacting them through their social media channels, sometimes that’s one of the easier ways.
