The Music Box – January 2017 Review

is a monthly music subscription box.  It offers several subscription options, including The Envelope ($5/month for one CD including songs from multiple artists and genres), The Box ($12/month for two CDs by featured artists plus “extra swag such as stickers, download cards, candy and possibly other amazing goodies”), and The Bundle ($15/month for The Envelope plus The Box).  You can choose from several genres when you subscribe: Pop Rock, Pop Punk, Alternative/Indie, Rock, Hard Rock/Metal, or Surprise.  A portion of the proceeds are used to support the featured artists.

This is a review of January’s Box.  I didn’t pick any genre, so this is a Surprise.

Everything in this month’s Music Box.

Each box includes an information card listing the two CDs in the box.

Until the End of Days by Nick Urb – This is a soft pop style album.  His voice kind of reminds me of Tom Odell: soft with some rasp, which I really like.  I’m a pop music girl and Ed Sheeran and Tom Odell’s style is my cup of tea.

The album includes 10 songs.

Brave by Retro Youth – Clearly Retro Youth is a rock band.  I hear some classic rock band signature plus some technology involved, which is not really my type of music.  I don’t hate rock music but I would like something a little softer and more towards the classic rock side.  I do very much like their occasional harmony and the lead singer’s falsetto part.

This album includes these 12 songs.  I think it’s really cute that one of their songs is named :).

There were also several cards advertising various artists who have music available for download.  The cat in the upper right corner is a sticker.

Fire Acoustics – This is a light rock style and I could hear lots of instruments in the song.  I wouldn’t say I hate it, but I’m not too much into instrument-heavy music.

Jerry Dale Harris – I actually didn’t notice at first that this was a signed card from Jerry himself.  I have a weird obsession over signed things.  Although I didn’t know him before receiving this box, it totally brought out my inner fangirl.  I really like the couple of songs I’ve listened to.  Apparently he’s a singer-songwriter with a little bit of country vibe and he tells stories with his music, which I like.

Jessie Standafer – Her website describes her music as “conscious music”, which kind of makes sense to me.  I heard a little bit of country, folk, pop, and some gospel mixed in her music.

They included a Park’s landing sticker and a keychain.  Yay I love keychains, and “Music is Life” indeed!

Back of the keychain.

Overall, I really enjoyed this month’s Music Box.  I’m pretty happy with the “Surprise” box.  It seems like it’s a pop and pop-rock centered box, which I would probably have picked if I were to pick a genre.  I subscribed to The Music Box before and I had a feeling that they were more centered on harder rock music, which I’m not really into.  I can see that they’ve added some more categories and also little things like keychains and stickers rather than the candy I remember them having before.  One of the other things I really like is that some of the proceedings go to the individual artists, which I really support because I understand some of the challenges they have to go through.
