Boxychan is one of the older mystery boxes on the market, and they just released a new subscription model.
25$ + Shipping
Boxychan is a mystery box with a myriad of themes, ranging from the general gamer to specific like, Final Fantasy (still waiting on that restock), to kid-friendly like Hello Kitty, to retro like Thundercats. Each box contains several collectibles and some of the items are Boxychan exclusives. They also recently introduced a subscription model, but you have to purchase a minimum of three months at a time.
I chose the gamer theme, and altogether my cost was 30.22, that’s with tax and shipping. The themes don’t restock very often, unfortunately. I also got no shipping notice – this arrived about two weeks after I paid. Random patrons also get super lucky boxes filled with high priced collectibles.
The photo for the gamer theme showed rather expensive items, such as actual video games, but I truly wouldn’t expect to get a game (especially nothing new release) out of this box unless you’re exceedingly lucky. When you sign up, select boxes also ask you for a shirt size in case your mystery box contains a shirt.
Because the boxes are all mystery themed, they don’t come with an info card. Instead they come with a promo card advertising that Final Fantasy theme that is consistently alluding me (are you reading this Boxychan? Restocks. Let’s get on that.)
Sonic X Wristband
When did Sonic X release again? 2003? This is one of those items that sort of teeters on the age thing because Sonic X originally released as a Japanese anime in 2003, but wasn’t aired in the US until a few years later. This more or less reminds me of a convention item.
Mario Puffy Hat
This is the Boxychan branded item so it’s not officially licensed, but it’s a cute hat nonetheless, and made quite well. I’m not a Mario Historian, but I think his outfit turns white when he gets fire flower abilities? Either way, good for cosplays.
Assassins Creed Figure – Aveline
Fun fact – D Lys and I bought the entire (at the time) set of Assassin’s Creed games a few years ago and have yet to play them. Money well spent. I have zero idea who this character is. The wiki’s suggest she’s an assassin from the late 1700’s, and also appears in games III and IV. I realllllly need to pull these out and play them. I’m a bit of a history nerd, idk why I haven’t played it before now. (The story follows a loose interpretation of actual historical events, and you play an assassin during those war time periods)
Super Street Fighter IV – Chun-Li Keychain
As a child of the 80’s and 90’s, I was subject to many a laundromat and arcade game. Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat were two of my favorites – cause clearly the best way to entertain a 8 year old is to let them play one of the bloodiest arcade games of the decade while you wait on towels to dry – and Chun-Li has always been one of my favorite gals. She would be the one I’d play when I owned a few of the games, so I’m pretty thrilled to get a cute keychain of her. This makes me want to go watch the animated movies of the 90s.
Mario Pins
Collectible Mario pins, ho hum.
Super Mario Galaxy Gachapon
A gachapon is a “mystery capsule” type item, where there’s multiple items you could get from a series. Pretty hot items, especially in Japan. I haven’t played Galaxy, but I have played enough rounds of Mario Kart to know that Rosalina is a badass and I wanted her so bad but because of dismal cosmic forces (seewhatididthere) I had to get the worst Princess ever. Peach is terrible. She also came with her head snapped off her body so I guess that’s one way to get instant gratification.
The jury is still out on this box. I love the little keychain, but I’m neutral to the hat and basically the rest of it, and I know I can throw that Assassin’s Creed figure on ebay. I’m just not the button collecting type and I woulda definitely kept the gachapon had it not been Peach, but that’s not exactly something I can control (nor it is Boxychan’s doing). Overall it felt kind of humdrum, I mean it definitely evoked some childhood memories there, and made me want to actually get use out of the Netflix account I pay for other people to use, but other than that it was basically forgettable. I am probably going to buy another theme though, just to test the waters (and because I cannot resist mystery boxes – send help).
If you’re interested in Boxychan, they have many different themes, and a 3 month subscription model, starting at 25$ per month. .
Purchased. All opinions are my own and no compensation was received.
