Sephora’s Play! subscription released a limited edition, VIB Rouge-exclusive box containing popular products from luxury brands. The Iconic Edition was a one-time purchase and not part of the monthly Play! subscription service.
The Iconic Edition was $20 for a one-time purchase.
The monthly Play! by Sephora is $10/month, including shipping. It is available in all US states.
Every Sephora Play! box packages its samples in an exclusively designed makeup bag. This month’s bag is specially made for The Iconic Edition, and is a slightly different style. It’s a gold-foiled plastic material, instead of the usual white canvas bag, and has the Play! logo stamped across the top. It also has a zipper closure with a gold ring zipper pull, instead of a ribbon-tie like the monthly subscription bags.
The information card has also been elevated for The Iconic Edition. Instead of the typical fold-out poster, this box came with a beautiful high-quality mini book. It had lots of tips for how to use the products, a quiz to pinpoint your makeup style, and some lovely inspirational quotes throughout.
Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupté Shine Oil-in-Lipstick in 49
This lipstick is described as a “bright strawberry pink,” and it certainly looks like that in the tube. When applied though, it’s a lot sheerer and more wearable. It adds a juicy pop of pink with a slightly glossy finish, and it fades into a pink stain. The color is very youthful without being too bold or over the top. The formula is comfortable to wear: slightly moisturizing from the oil without being too messy or smudgey. When I first apply it, it can be a little streaky, but once the color melts into my lips it becomes gorgeously glossy and even. In case you can’t tell, I really love this lipstick!
Guerlain L’Or Pure Radiance Face Primer
This skin-perfecting face primer is infused with real flakes of 24k gold. It’s certainly luxurious, but to be honest I’m not sure if the gold actually does anything. The primer, on the other hand, is a really nice formula – it’s almost like a cross between a face oil and a primer. It evens out my skin and provides a smooth base for my makeup, but also feels hydrating and not at all powdery like some primers can. It gives my face a nice glow and definitely makes my makeup last longer than if I weren’t wearing primer. It’s not really mattifying, so if you’re looking for oil control you may want to find a different option.
Burberry Cat Lashes Mascara
I haven’t worn mascara in a while since I have watery eyes and mascara tends to smudge onto my contacts, but this may have just convinced me to come back. The wand is hourglass shaped and gets right down to the base of every little lash. The formula gives my thin lashes good volume and a little more length. There’s no crunchiness or stiffness; my lashes feel fluttery and light. On me, it’s definitely a more natural vibe than the dramatic effect Burberry promises, but I’m not complaining. My only wish is that this formula were waterproof, but it hasn’t smudged or transferred to my undereye so that isn’t a dealbreaker for me!
Dior Poison Girl
This perfume has notes of rose, neroli, and orange. It starts off as a sexy floral fragrance, and deepens into a spicy warmth after a few hours. It’s a little heavier than what I usually wear, especially for this time of year when I prefer fresher scents, but it would be great for an evening party or a date night. I wasn’t a big fan of the original Poison, but this version is lighter and more playful. It actually works well for my age I think: I’m trying to gravitate away from childish powdery florals, but haven’t gotten to the high end mature fragrances yet.
La Mer The Moisturizing Soft Cream
If I’m being honest, this cream is what convinced me to purchase The Iconic Edition – I’ve always been curious about La Mer! This moisturizer contains La Mer’s famous Miracle Broth that nourishes and soothes skin. It’s soft and light in the jar, but once applied it feels rich and hydrating and makes my skin a little more radiant. I use it as a night cream, and my skin feels softer in the morning. There is a light perfume-y fragrance that disappears quickly and doesn’t irritate my skin. Is it worth the $170/oz. price tag? Not to me. But I’m happy to have tried it and it’s certainly a good moisturizer, and if one day I become rich and famous maybe I will add it to my daily routine.
Tom Ford Black Orchid
While I do think two perfume samples may be slightly unnecessary, I can’t deny that this packaging is very unique! It comes in a little gold foil packet that matches the bag (and the color theme of the whole box), which you tear open to reveal…
A little rollerball! This perfume contains notes of black truffle, black orchid, and black plum. In the rollerball, it smells very woodsy and spicy. I haven’t tried it yet – to be honest, I feel like it’s a fragrance for a fancy event or a night out, and I don’t go to many of those so I haven’t had an opportunity yet. Maybe for my next date night! But, I do think this is one of those fragrances that you must try yourself to see how it reacts with your personal skin chemistry.
Sephora promised a box of luxury brands, and they certainly delivered! I’ve discovered so many new products that I love but are out of my budget (Sephora seems to be guilty of that quite often). The lipstick and the mascara are my surprise favorites, and I’m glad I got to feel extra luxurious for a moment with that La Mer cream. I hope Sephora releases more boxes like these!
