August’s theme was back to school. I honestly forget that most schools start in August along with my graduate school. I think I’m on school brain mode cause I never get a Summer break, so I keep thinking no one else does either. #NOBREAK4U
Assassination Classroom Dry Erase Board
So funfact, I went to a convention this past weekend (full post on that coming up) and there was a guy walking around with the green smiley mask on, but I made zero connection that it was this series. I’ve never actually seen said series. From wikipedia:
The series follows the daily lives of an extremely powerful octopus-like teacher and his students dedicated to the task of assassinating him to prevent Earth from being destroyed.
Oh. Well that’s a premise. Either way I dig dry erase boards (I get more plain everyday) so I’m pretty thrilled with this. Y’all know I love when items have a practical purpose.
Digimon Adventure Tri Prints
Okay so, being totally honest – I was always one of those people who loved Digimon more than Pokemon growing up. I haven’t seen the original series in several years and I think I was like… 9-11 when it aired? Either way I never lost my love for the original series, and I liked the next season (when they introduced Yolei, Cody, Davis and Ken). I stopped watching after all the digimons started merging together, but there was always something about the original kids that I loved. I have a soft spot for Gomamon and Gabumon.
Anywho, Tri is an extension of that original series in a completely different art style with a vastly different story, and one new kid. Digimon are “leaking” into the real world causing havoc, which causes all the good digimon to pretty much turn into pariahs. There’s three movies total, the third one having just released in Japan and the firsts dub version just barely released here in the US. I still haven’t seen the dubbed, though I did see the first two subbed.
Anywaaaaay since we’ve veered off topic a bit, these are high quality prints that are about half the size of a standard sheet of paper. The paper itself is a heavyweight cardstock that’s textured. I think my favorite print is the one on the far left with Tai and Agumon.
Revolutionary Girl Utena Bento Box
This series has been on my “to watch” list for damn near forever. It’s about Utena (pink hair), a schoolgirl who wants to grow up to become a prince. From WIkipedia:
“The main character is Utena Tenjou, a tomboyish teenage girl who was so impressed by a kind prince in her childhood that she decided to become a prince herself, expressed in her manner of dress and personality. She attends Ohtori Academy, where she meets a student named Anthy Himemiya, a girl who is in an abusive relationship with another student. Utena fights to protect Anthy and is pulled into a series of sword duels with the members of the Student Council. Anthy is referred to as the “Rose Bride” (薔薇の花嫁Bara no hanayome?) and is given to the winner of each duel. It is said that the winner of the tournament will receive a mysterious “power to revolutionize the world”, and the current champion is constantly challenged for the right to possess the Rose Bride.”
This anime is one of the oldest; I remember it popping up when I was a kid in the late 90s.
The bento box comes with chop sticks, a movable divider and a “sealer” type compartment that works sort of like tupperware (I probably just offended all bento box users). The whole thing is sealed with a rubber band.
Persona 3 Manga Volume 1
So Persona is a series that D Lys particularly loves, and one that I just never got into. I’m still not 100% sure what it’s about to be honest, though I did try to hard sell this box to D Lys since she loves Persona and the spoiler theme came out before the contents. She said, and I quote: “Well I can just take it from you.”
Well she’s not wrong…. I tried Loot Crate, I swear I did.
In Persona 3, the player takes the role of a male high-school student who joins the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad (SEES), a group of students investigating the Dark Hour, a time period between one day and the next that few people are aware of. During the Dark Hour, the player enters Tartarus, a large tower containing Shadows, creatures that feed on the minds of humans. To fight the Shadows, each member of SEES is able to summon a Persona, a manifestation of a person’s inner self.
Dangan Ronpa Tie
This BLEW UP my Tumblr for a straight two years and literally exploded in popularity. Another anime I’d never seen but apparently it centers around some high school students and their hunger games like fighting. This is the character Junko’s tie, who I remember having like 50 personalities from Tumblr. What I like about the tie is it doesn’t strictly have to be for cosplay – it’s simple enough that it can be for everyday wear.
I don’t think I’ve ever worn a tie in my life so I can’t say I kept this.
Fruits Basket Charms
I tell ya, I never expected to get a Fruits Basket item in this box, let alone four! Fruits Basket is an older anime and manga which focuses on the Soma clan and Tohru, the bumbling ball of optimism who stumbles upon their secret. Select members of the clan turn into the members of the Chinese Zodiac when under extreme stress or hugged by a member of the opposite sex.
Pictured is Tohru, Hatsuharu, Kyo and Yuki. There’s an entire episode devoted to how Tohru says “Riceball in a Fruits Basket,” which is a way of saying she feels out of place. Honestly I’m not nuts about Tohru – she can get incredibly preachy (that Kisa episode omG) – but I do like Haru, Yuki and Kyo.
I’m kind of surprised they didn’t include Shigure (the dog) instead of Haru. Haru was more comical sure, but Shigure arguably had a higher character status given that he lived in the home with Tohru, Yuki and Kyo. Either way I highly recommend this show, it’s cute and comical but it has a lot of darker undertones. You can catch it on Hulu and Netflix.
This box ships super late, literally at the tail end of the following month hence why I’m always behind on reviews (I just got September’s today). Overall I really like this box, especially because of the practical element the items provide, so they’re much more useful, especially if you don’t know the anime itself. It’s a good mix of new and old, and classic.
